A student's view of a Manhattan classroom is very similar
to the teacher's. Manhattan doesn't have a special "designer mode" that is used by the
teacher to make learning materials available to her students.
For the most part, the teacher sees the same menus, buttons,
and pages that a student sees, although often the teacher has
a few more commands available than a student does. (See Differences between the
teachers' and students' views for a summary of the
differences.) One very significant difference between a
student's and teacher's view of Manhattan is contained within
the main menu's
button. Only
the teacher of the course has the Configuration button as the
last item on the main menu.
Once a Manhattan classroom has been set up by the server administrator, the teacher is in full control. Using commands found within the Configuration section, the teacher can:
Change details like the name of the course, the semester, and how your name appears throughout the system.
Turn Manhattan's modules on or off.
Reset student passwords, and make minor changes to their names.
Add new students and additional teachers to the classroom.
Remove students and teachers from the classroom.
Get a roster for your course as a text file that can be imported into a spreadsheet or grade book program.
Organize your students into teams.
View logs that show when your students have logged in, and what they have done while logged in.
Get information about the amount of disk space used by your classroom.
View the contents of your Clipboard, which is a special feature addressed above in Manhattan's Copy and Paste Commands.
This chapter explains the options available to the teacher via the Configuration menu. Some capabilities, such as assigning students to teams and getting a course roster will be revisited in later chapters of this manual. Note that this manual is more of a reference than a tutorial. If this is your first reading of the manual, skim over the sections of this chapter to get a broad view of the capabilities presented by the Configuration menu. You can always refer back to this chapter when you've gained more experience with Manhattan.
